from a volcano in the area known as the Valley of Desolation — words that seem to describe life on another planet but which perfectly capture what you’ll find if you’re daring enough. 200 feet wide and its depth unknown, the lake is enveloped by swirling clouds of vapor and resembles a cauldron of furiously bubbling greyish-blue water superheated from the molten magma below the surface of the surrounding rock. The surrounding area is also home to some of the hardiest creatures on the planet — small lizards and a few species of insects.

Victoria Falls is on the opposite side of the island as Fort Young Hotel. The hour-long drive will bring you through quaint villages, forests, and beautiful ocean views. There are several spots to soak, sit, and relax along the trail as well, making it a great day activity for groups.

Valley of Desolation

As its name suggests, the Valley of Desolation is a barren patch of land, devoid of any vegetation due to the perpetual volcanic activity around. Originally formed from 3 volcanic craters, the valley is dominated by thick clouds of steam and mist all year round, emanating from its numerous fumaroles, Sulphur vents and hot springs, the latter of which can serve as a natural jacuzzi to soak your feet in after the perilous hike.

The somewhat extraterrestrial landscape is also home to dozens of bubbling and yellowish mud volcanoes, whose soggy content supposedly has a myriad of health benefits, particularly for skin care.

Fresh Water Lake

Just 2 miles north-east of the village of Laudat is the Freshwater Lake, which can be reached via the historic Chimen Létan or "Lake Road". Visitor facilities and a Visitor Centre are provided near the lake. Several hiking trails begin in the area and offer the enthusiast a variety of challenges and the opportunity to explore the interior of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park.

Freshwater Lake is the largest of Dominica's four lakes. It is located at just over 2,500 ft above sea level and is the natural source of the Roseau River. The lake has been dammed to provide water to generate electricity.

A hike along the Freshwater Lake Trail provides an opportunity to study Dominica's higher forests. Montane forest, which can be recognized by its short, thin trees and open canopy, covers the majority of the area surrounding the lake. The shallow soils and strong winds do not permit the luxuriant growth that is so characteristic of the rain forest.
